Description
This presentation examines ageism in physical therapy practice and its impact on clinical decision-making, patient outcomes, and access to care. Age-based assumptions, often implicit and well-intentioned, can influence goal setting, treatment intensity, communication, and discharge planning. Using evidence from the healthcare literature and real-world PT examples, this session encourages clinicians to recognize ageism in themselves and in systems, reflect on everyday practice patterns, and apply practical strategies to deliver ethical, equitable, and patient-centered care to older adults.

Goals/ Objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define ageism and recognize how it appears explicitly and implicitly within physical therapy practice.
  2. Explain how age-based bias impacts patient outcomes, access to care, and ethical decision-making.
  3. Identify common ageist assumptions in communication, documentation, goal setting, and treatment planning.
  4. Apply practical strategies to reduce ageism and promote equitable, evidence-based care for older adults.
