Who Physical Therapists Are

Physical therapists help people move better, manage pain, and recover from injuries or illness. They work with patients of all ages--whether recovering from an accident, managing a chronic condition, or regaining strength after surgery.

By assessing a person's movement, strength, and function, physical therapists create personalized treatment plans to restore mobility, improve strength and balance, and prevent future problems. Treatment may include guided stretches, targeted exercises, and progressive strength training--always tailored to the individual's needs.

What do Physical Therapists treat?

  • Physical Therapists help people regain motion and strength that can be lost due to injury or disease. Whether you are a high school athlete, weekend warrior, desk jockey, retiree, professional athlete, young child, domestic engineer, manual laborer or anything in between, Physical Therapists can help you regain motion, strength, endurance and ability to do functional activities that have been impaired from injury or other medical conditions. Physical Therapists can also help you establish a healthier lifestyle and increase physical activity in your life. These can help you prevent or treat obesity and other chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, stroke, cancer and loss of balance.
  • Physical therapists help Americans move better and live better lives. They also help them avoid complications from surgeries, long recoveries, and the risks of prescribed medications.  Research has shown the benefits of physical therapy for many conditions. Now a study commissioned by the American Physical Therapy Association, offers another reason to recommend or choose physical therapy -- the overall value it provides to patients and the health care system. View our patient-friendly resources for the eight conditions studied here.

Do I need a referral or insurance?

  • There are Physical Therapists in most cities and towns in Nevada, and you can make an appointment to see your local Physical Therapist without a prescription from your doctor. Note that many insurance plans require a doctor's prescription for physical therapy if you want to access benefits payments for treatment, however. So check with your insurance plan first, so you are familiar with your individual plan benefits.
  • Physical therapy clinics also accept patients who do not use insurance plans. In these cases, you do not need a doctor's prescription for physical therapy to be treated by a Physical Therapist. Simply call the clinic and make an appointment. If the Physical Therapist who evaluates you believes you need diagnostic testing (such as x-rays, MRI or blood tests) or a consult with a physician, s/he will advise you of that at the time of your evaluation.

Can I Get a HANDICAP PLACARD from my PHYSICAL THERAPIST in Nevada?

Yes! Thanks to a new Nevada law that takes effect October 1, physical therapists are now authorized to complete the paperwork for a handicap (disabled) parking placard. This means you can skip an extra doctor's visit if you're already seeing a PT for a qualifying condition.

How It Works:

  1. Schedule an appointment with your physical therapist.

  2. Your PT will evaluate your mobility and determine if you meet Nevada's criteria for a placard.

  3. If you qualify, your PT can fill out and sign the required state form.

  4. Submit the completed form to the Nevada DMV to receive your placard.

This change makes it faster and easier for Nevadans with mobility limitations to get the access they need.
